On the banks of the River Bacchglione
near the Po River, lies the city of Vicenza. Nearby stand the Alpine hills and volcanic mountains Berici. Vicenza was under the dominion of Venice in the 15th century, sharing their wealth with the city-state until the arrival of Napoleon in 1797. The city centre is small, compact and medieval. The architect Andrea Palladio was apprenticed and worked here, there are many examples of his work in Vicenza as Chiericatti Palace, the Palladian Basilica and the City Art Gallery. Vicenza is a great starting point to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palladian Villas of the Veneto. Vicenza is also itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the heart of the old city is the Piazza dei Signori is where City Hall (Palazzo della Regione).
