The island of Torcello is located
in the north of Venice about 40 minutes by ferry. In the fifth century, people from the mainland, fleeing the invading Lombards and Huns settled in Torcello and founded a colony that once had 20,000 inhabitants. The malaria decimated the population and the power moved to Venice, nowadays in Torcello there are just a few farmers and fishermen. It stands out on this island, the stunning Basilica of Torcello (Santa Maria Assunta). Next to lies the Church of Santa Fosca. The ferry number 12 connects Venice to Torcello with stops in Murano and Burano. Hotels in Venice
