Syracuse was founded by the Greeks
in the 8th century BC. Located on the Italian island of Sicily, Syracuse was described by Cicero as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of all.” The historic centre of Syracuse is considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, it is one of the oldest cities in Sicily and Italy. After a strong earthquake in 1693, the city was rebuilt in Syracuse Sicilian Baroque style, now considered classic architecture of southern Italy. Do not miss the Piazza del Duomo, the Cathedral, the Maniace Castle, the Bellomo Palace, the Temple of Athens, the Arethusa Fountain, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Basilica of St Lucia. By train: There are daily trains from Rome and Naples in mainland Italy. There are also trains from other cities in Sicily.
