Carcassonne is a beautiful city
situated in the Languedoc region. The city it seems two different ones, a city within the walls on one side and a modern city on the other. The fortified town (Cité de Carcassonne) is UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a double ring of walls with 53 massive towers, medieval walls built on Roman foundations. Besides the towers stands inside the walls, the charming streets, and the Basilica Saint Nazarius. The lower town (Ville Basse) throughout the Aude River was founded by King Louis IX in 1247, this medieval city grew and was very important in the footwear industry and textiles. Tourism is currently the basis of the economy of Carcassonne that is crossed by the Canal du Midi, a masterpiece of engineering that also deserves the distinction of UNESCO. The Place Carnot is the largest meeting point of Carcassonne. Do not miss the Saint Gimer Church, the Saint Vincent Church, the Saint Michel Cathedral outside the walls and everything inside the walls.
