The Camargue is a vast area of marshes
formed by the delta of the rivers Grand Rhone and Petit Rhone, near the Mediterranean Sea and near the city of Arles. It is a protected area, full of wild animals with huge fields and ponds. It is thought that the name derives from Camargue Caius Marius, a Roman general who owned vast tracts of land here. Camargue horses are unique and world famous. The area is rich in wildlife with wild boars, badgers, beavers and 337 species of birds.
