Lisbon (Lisboa) is nestled among seven hills
on the north side of the mouth of the river Tagus (Tejo). The Praça do Comercio along the harbor is one of the most illustrious and wide squares of Europe, with three sides of elegant buildings and beautiful arches and galleries and the 4th side formed by the riverside.The port of Lisbon has been used since 3000 years ago but the peak was between the 15th and 17th centuries at a time when Portugal was a country rich and powerful empire in the world. Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India in 1498 and Portugal gathered thereof enormous profits from the trade in spices and precious stones. 1755 Lisbon scored negatively because of a massive earthquake that devastated the city. Lisbon never regained its former glory but today is a city with success and one of the most beautiful in Europe received many tourists each year. Lisbon is a charming city full of contrasts, modern buildings and other very old sometimes side by side, typical Portuguese tiles, museums, parks, churches and monasteries not to be missed. Alfama and Bairro Alto are the most typical of the city, the views over the river are breathtaking obtained from various viewpoints in both districts. Other Lisbon highlight are Lisbon Cathedral and the Castle of São Jorge. In downtown Lisbon there is a fabulous church with a facade of the typical Manueline (late Gothic Portuguese), is the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Church of Our Lady of Conception). In downtown you must visit the gorgeous Rua Augusta and the Avenida da Liberdade, a big avenue that starts in one of the Lisbon’s main squares, Praça do Marquês de Pombal.In the area of Belém it is a tribute to the Discoveries, there is the Torre de Belém and the Monastery of Jeronimos two of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Rossio is one of the most beautiful squares of Europe.

Very close is the Belém Palace, official residence of the President of the Republic and the Ajuda Palace. The controversial cultural center built in the 90s of the 20th century is located opposite the magnificent monastery. The most prominent museums in the city are the National Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum Calouste Gulbenkian. Among the main churches of Lisbon beyond those already Cathedral, Jeronimos Monastery and Church of Our Lady of Conception, are also the São Vicente de Fora Church, the Basilica da Estrela and the National Pantheon.In 1998 he received a Lisbon universal exhibition (EXPO 98) that has reshaped the eastern city of obsolete factories started to have a modern city with strong ties to the river. That new district calls Parque das Nações it means Nations Park, the Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest indoor aquarium of Europe and is one of the main point of this beautiful new area.
