The Rottnest Island lies in the Indian Ocean,
off the southwest coast of Australia, just 19 km (12 mi) west of the city of Fremantle and also close to Perth. The Rottnest Island is famous for the quality of diving and snorkeling. The island was discovered by Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh in 1696. During the 19th century the area was a barbaric penal colony native Australian, today is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Western Australia. The climate is Mediterranean, the stunning colonial architecture and excellent beaches, makes the Rottnest Island a place desired. The island is 11 km (7 mi) long and 4,5 km (2,8 mi) wide, there is just one settlement, Thomson’s Bay. The population of Rottnest Island is just about 350 people.
