Situated on the banks of the Swan River
(which was named after the black swans have been seen here for the first time by Europeans in the 1690s), Perth became the capital of Western Australia. Settlers arrived in Perth in 1829 but the aspect of the city looks much younger, Victorian buildings proliferate, especially in the city centre. One quarter of the city’s inhabitants were born abroad which gives a fresh, youthful and multicultural touch to Perth. In the Swan Valley area, there are some vineyards that make Perth one of the best places to produce Australian wine. Don’t miss the Zoo Perth, the Perth Mint, the Perth Concert Hall and his Majesty Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Art and Aquarius. Perth’s nightlife happens mostly in Northridge, where the best restaurants and bars in town are located. At Swan River stands out aquatic activities and boat trips to the winemaking region. If you like, you can surf at Scarborough Beach. “Fremantle Doctor” is the afternoon breeze that cools the city from the strong midday sun. Rottnest Island is near Perth and deserves a visit as much as the neighbor city of Fremantle. Hotels in Perth
