About 200 kms (125 mi) from Bangkok
in the Gulf of Thailand, lies the island of Ko Samet. This island is quite different than others in Thailand because it has more Thai tourists than foreigners (farangs). Due to its proximity of Bangkok, Thai people from the capital, use to come spend weekends on this piece of paradise. Less than 30 minutes boat ride is what separates mainland to Ko Samet. The white sand beaches of Ko Samet, are at the level of the best beaches of the southern islands. The Thai middle class have fun on this island together with the foreign visitors who prefer to stay on Ko Samet instead of going south. Ko Samet and the small islands of the archipelago was declared a National Park in 1981. Although there are hotels all around the island are small hotels with bungalows set within the landscape, has no large resorts. The eastern part of the island is more developed and has the best beaches. The interior of the island is quite different, is mountainous and covered by a dense tropical forest, home to gibbons, long-tailed monkeys, lizards, bats and other species. It’s worth a trek through the interior of the island, at the top should see a stunning sunset. The Diamond Beach (Hat Sai Kaew) is the nearest beach to the ferry pier and one of the most beautiful of Ko Samet. In the southern part of the beach is a statue of a mermaid built here in honor of one of the greatest poets Thai, Sunthorn Phu. In Bangkok, they sell travel to get to Ko Samet, is very cheap and fast. The nightlife on Diamond Beach is great, every night the restaurant bars has activities like fire artists playing and dancing together with the Ko Samet visitors. Ko Samet has plenty of beach activities such as diving, snorkeling, playing volleyball or just have a massage. Ko Samet is also known as Ko Samed. Hotels in Ko Samet
