The Republic of Maldives is an island nation
consisting of main 26 atolls with 1200 islands, 200 inhabited. Spread across the Indian Ocean, 700 km (435 mi) southwest of Sri Lanka. The islands have a maximum height of 2.6 m (7.5 ft) and are threatened by global warming and by the rise of sea level. The tourism is the main source of revenue of Maldives. The tourists looking for idyllic beaches in luxury resorts, some of the best resorts are the only in a single island, protected by a coral reef. There are also some small and beautiful islands with white sand beaches and inhabitted by locals, the most famous is Maafushi. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving are the main activities in the Maldives.
