This mega city, the largest in India
was originally an archipelago inhabited by fishermen and Buddhist monks. The islands were acquired by a Portuguese who gave Charles II as a dowry to marry Catherine of Bragança in 1668. The Crown offered the lease to the British East India Company for just 10 British pounds per year. The seven muddy islands quickly became the colonial city of Bombay which became the most important port on the Arabian Sea and the headquarters of the west coast. Since then Bombay (changed its name to Mumbai in 1995) and never stopped growing. The Gateway of India is the main monument of Mumbai left there the last British soldiers. Another of the most famous icons of the city is the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, built by the father of Indian industry Jamsetji Tata. Tata built the hotel after he was refused entry to a hotel because he was a “native” and Mumbai was the city more westernized cosmopolitan and frantic of India. Today it is a city of contrasts, most of the wealth people live near the most poignant poverty. Bollywood the biggest film industry in the world brings many to Mumbai, people who chases the dream of one day being an actor or actress.
