Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake
in Southeast Asia. Located in Cambodia, Tonle Sap means “great river of fresh water.” Formed 6,000 years ago, the lake is connected to the Tonle Sap River, which is connected to the Mekong River. In several months of the year, the Tonle Sap covers an area of 2700 sq km and has only 1 m (3.3 ft) deep. During the rainy season, the Tonle Sap, receives the waters of the Mekong and its size increased five times, the depth can reach 10 m (33 ft).
