Phnom Penh is the capital
of the Kingdom of Cambodia and is located at the confluence of three rivers, the Mekong, the Bassac and Tonle Sap. Although the 290 km (180 mi) from the sea, Phnom Penh is a major port of the Mekong River, and is linked to the South China Sea through a canal in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. The city got its name from Wat Phnom Daun Penh (Temple Hill), built in 1373 to house five statues of Buddha. The Khmer Rouge marked the history of the city, they were expelled by the Vietnamese in 1979. Tourism started in Phnom Penh, visitors were looking for the French heritage present in wide boulevards, colonial buildings, parks and green spaces.
