Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is one of the

most important archaeological sites in the world. It was the centre of an advanced society, with a population of over 200 000 people. The occupation began in 500 BC, but the construction of the Pyramid of the Sun, only began after 100 BC. The magnificent pyramids and palaces once covered an area of 31 sq km (12 sq mi), but were abandoned in the year 700 AD, and very little is known about what happened to the people. Teotihuacan is considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The highlights of Teotihuacan are the Pyramid of the Sun, the Calzada de los Muertos (Avenue of the Dead), the Pyramid of the Moon, Ciudadela (Citadel) and the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl. Teotihuacan is located 40 km (25 mi) east of Mexico City and there are daily tours from the capital. Hotels in Mexico City
