Every year during the month of October
the leaves of New England begin a symphony of vibrant colors before they hit the ground in the natural course prior winter. This explains the fact that autumn is the season when more people visit New England. But why the leaves change color in autumn? In autumn the leaves stop producing chlorophyll that gives them the green and other colors show from other pigments such as carotenoids that provide them with the yellow, orange and brown and anthocyanins that give red and purple. The autumn leaf color is different in each species of tree because it depends on the different chemicals in each tree. The Oaks turn red, brown or russet, the hickories become golden bronze, red and purple dogwoods brilliant scarlet red maple, glowing yellow and black maple sugar maple turns red-orange. The range and intensity of autumn colors influence the climate, are produced when they are dry and sunny day and followed by cool nights. It is a show produced by nature and it’s worth going to New England to witness live this phenomenon.
