The Lake Taupo was created
on top of the crater of a volcano after a strong eruption 2600 years ago. The last eruption of this volcano on the North Island of New Zealand, was there 1800 years ago. In the area there are several hot thermal springs, geysers and plopping mud puddles, especially in Wairakui at the northern end of the lake. The lake has crystal clear waters and is perfect to yachting and kayaking, while the countryside around is great to skiing in Winter and walking and hiking. One day this huge volcano may erupt again but now it is a special place to contemplate the forces of nature. You canget Lake Taupo by road from Auckland, 180 km (111 mi) away. Hotels in North Island
