In the place where the river Adage
emerges from the Alps, lies the city of Verona. It was known as the City of Bridges (there are 10) and was the most important city of Venice on the mainland (Terra Firma). Picturesque streets, plazas, breathtaking art and stunning architecture, Verona is consided by UNESCO, a World Heritage Site. The famous buildings and monuments show the rich history of the city, the amphitheater from 30 AD is the third largest in Italy. There are other Roman vestiges in the city as a theatre and rebuilt Gavi Arch. One of the most beautiful monuments of Verona is the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, a triumph of Romanesque architecture dating from the 12th century. The Church of Santa Maria Antica and the Gothic cathedral are other important religious works. Verona has plenty of churches, most beautiful and richly decorated interior. The maximum brightness of the old town is the Piazza delle Erbe, where it runs a market and was once a Roman forum. Another lovely square is the Piazza dei Signori which is surrounded by palaces. Do not miss in this beautiful city the Loggia del Consiglio a Renaissance building, the city walls and the Porta del Palio. A visit to the Natural History Museum is worthy.
