It was the year 1979 when a group
of young people enthusiasts of theatre and Venetian culture, had the idea of reviving the carnivals of Venice, which since the eighteenth century, after Napoleon’s ban, had lost splendor. The rulers were afraid of the height of the subversive power of the masks. Currently the Carnival of Venice differentiates itself by sumptuous and imaginative costumes that recreate costumes from past centuries. The St. Mark’s Square is adorned to host the event which lasts from week previous to Ash Wednesday. The Venetians prefer to celebrate Carnival in little squares and private parties than in St. Mark’s Square where the tourists use to go. During the Old Republic Carnival was celebrated from the 26th of December. Hotels in Venice
