Mount Etna

Mount Etna  is the highest active

volcano in Europe (3323m/10,900 ft). It is the largest natural attraction in Sicily, Italy and the ancient Greeks thought it was the kingdom of Hephaestus, the god of fire. Now is a paradise for skiers in winter and hikers throughout the year. There are small towns clustered around its base that has some openings being impossible to predict whether the next eruption will produce only steam or lava. Mount Etna wilderness is protected by law.  Etna has several smaller peaks on their flanks which are also very beautiful to walk. The hike to Monte Gallo leads to Rifugio Galverina, an outpost in the heart of the forest of oaks, pines, beech and other trees. In the northern slope of Mount Spagnolo is also a popular route. This whole area is home to hawks, eagles, owls and partridges. Climb to the top of the volcano is completely forbidden and where Etna is undergoing an active phase, the longer routes are also closed down.  Catania is a good starting point to reach the nearby cities of Etna. Hotels in Sicily
