The Piazza Navona is one of the most
enchanting squares of Rome. Its narrow and elongated shape is due to the fact that the Emperor Domiciano to have a stadium to be built where besides sports competitions were also battles between gladiators and beasts. The square had capacity for 30,000 spectators. During the Renaissance Piazza Navona has undergone renovations and in 1477 Pope Sixtus IV had transferred to Navona the market of the Capitol. It is probably the most beautiful square in Rome. Thanks to the construction of several aristocratic palaces like the Palazzo alle Colonne and the Palazzo Madama, Piazza Navona and surrounding area became a privileged upper classes of Roman society. Currently the square stands the Palazzo Pamphili which houses the Embassy of Brazil, the Church of St. Agnes, the monumental Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) and Fontana del Moro.
