The Franciscan Church of Santa Croce
in Florence date of 1294, Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect responsible for the Florence‘s cathedral, was responsible for replacing the previous small church built in 1222, still with St. Francis of Assisi live. The purpose of this church was overcome monumental dimensions of the Santa Maria Novella church built 50 years earlier by the Dominicans. The interior of the church is a landmark of Italian Gothic architecture. Throughout the ages the Church of Santa Croce became a pantheon of geniuses Florentines where are the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Dante, Ghiberti, Gioacchino Rossini and others. The highlights are the Cappella Maggiore, the Cappella dei Pazzi, the Cappella Bardi and the Cappella Peruzzi. Giotto painted many frescoes in this church.
