Lower River Loire at its confluence with the River Cher halfway between Orléans and the Atlantic Ocean. During the Franco-Prussian War, when Paris was under siege, Tours was the capital of France from 1871 to 1879. Tours is the most popular jumping-off city in Loire Valley with many connections by bus or train to the great chateaux (castles) of the region.
