The opulent Paris Opera, designed by
Charles Garnier for Napoleon III, resembles a giant wedding cake. Its construction was started in 1862 and took 13 years to build. Its architecture includes several styles, from Baroque to Classical, with friezes and stone columns, statues, multicolored marbles and a green copper dome. The interior has a marble staircase, a vaulted ceiling with mosaics on the Great Hall and an auditorium with a ceiling of Marc Chagall. There is even an underground lake beneath the building that served as inspiration for “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux. It is one of the most beautiful buildings of Paris. Hotels in Paris
