The Mont-St-Michel is one of the
most famous images of France. Situated 80 m (260 ft) above the bay is a granite rock that can be seen from all sides due to the wide and clean landscape that is around it. In 966, Duke of Normandy replaced the chapel of a Benedictine Abbey but the troops of Phillipe-Auguste replaced by the current Gothic abbey. The fortifications were added by Charles VI. After a period of decline, Napoleon became a prison and the abbey in 1874 was declared a national monument and began its restoration. The Mont-St-Michel is separated from the mainland by 1 km (0.6 mi) of water that becomes quicksand when the tide is low. The bridge connection exists only since 1879, prior to this time the pilgrims swam to reach the hill and sometimes died drowned. When it comes to the mountain, you begin to climb steep and narrow streets filled with souvenir shops until you reach the abbey. You can get the Mont St-Michel from the city of St Malo. It is the most visited landmark of Normandy and one of the most visited of France. Hotels in Normandy
