The stunning French city of Arles
is located on the banks of the Rhone River north of the Camargue and the Mediterranean Sea. It is full of medieval buildings as the Roman Arena which has attracted many over the centuries. In the first century BC, Julio Cesar appointed Arles a Roman colony, after winning Marseille. The city grew very well at that time enjoying a strategic position as important as the river Rhone. With the decline of the empire, Arles became less important but did not lost its charm from its monuments. The old theater has received more than 20,000 spectators and is still used today as a concert venue. The Venus of Arles, was found here, is currently exhibited in the Louvre. Besides the magnificent arena, there is also the Romanesque church of St Trophime. Arles is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the south of France and well worth a visit. You can reach Arles by train from the cities of Marseille, Avignon, Montpellier and Nimes. Hotels in Arles
