Mount Ararat (Buyuk Agri Dagi)
is the highest peak in Turkey with 5137 m (16,854 ft). You are in the far northeast of Turkey close to the border with Iran and Armenia. Although in Turkish territory, Ararat is the national symbol of Armenia. It is a dormant volcano and its summit is permanently covered with snow. The archaeologists are very interested by Mount Ararat, the religious as well, because of the importance it has in the Book of Genesis. Noah and his family allegedly met here after the Great Flood. Josephus and Marco Polo mentioned that the Ark of Noah was in Ararat. In 2004, the area was designated as the Kackar Mountains National Park, in an effort to attract tourists. This made visiting the area easier for foreign visitors, but also allows to be applied at least two months before a proposed visit, because this is a politically sensitive region.
