The Blue Mosque or Sultan Ahmet Mosque
is an Ottoman mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. Opposite of Hagia Sophia, is a magnificent building built between 1609 and 1616, has six minarets and sweeping views of the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn and the Bosphurus. It was designed by Sultan Ahmet I in its interior and has more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. It has a central dome and other smaller domes that transform the Blue Mosque one of the most striking and beautiful buildings of Istanbul. 260 windows surround the interior of the mosque, the light entering from the outside creates an overwhelming effect on the blue tiles. When opened the Blue Mosque, the Mosque of Mecca was the only who had six minarets. The Blue Mosque is open every day except during prayers, the interior is decorated with impressive carpets.
