Phillip II built the Escorial (El Escorial in Spanish)
to replace a hermitage dedicated to St Lawrence to celebrate the Spanish victory over the French in 1557. The palace is located in the foothills of the Sierra Guadarrama in a unadorned architectural style. The basilica and simple apartments do not show the real wealth of the Habsburg art collection, which is largely housed in other buildings like the library and the royal pantheon. The library has 40,000 books, the ceiling is decorated with frescoes and Tibaldi’s houses works by Titian, Tintoretto and Bosch. Above the main staircase of the monastery is a cool impressive Giordano. You can get this place by train or bus from Madrid, is situated at 45 km (28 mi). Hotels in Madrid
