La Rioja is a region of Spain
known for its excellent wine. The economy of the river Ebro is based on producing wine since Roman times. The region has only 150 km (90 mi) long and 50 km (30 mi) wide, almost completely surrounded by mountains, providing a micro-climate ideal for grape growing. Laguardiathe heart of Alavesa, is a walled city, medieval with over 300 wineries (bodegas). Also in La Rioja and close to the River Ebro, are the historic cities of El Ciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Briones.
