Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country
in northern Spain, has been since the 19th century an important port in regional trade. Bilbao was a very industrialized city but lost glow and when the city was depressed in architectural terms found a solution to modernize its center. A few futuristic buildings and a modern subway system joined one of the most important building of the late 20th century across Europe, the building of the Guggenheim Museum. The Basque authorities reached an agreement with the Guggenheim Foundation and Frank O.Gehry designed a masterpiece of modern architecture along the river Nervion. In the year that opened the Guggenheim Museum received 1.4 million visitors, one million more than expected. The building is a work of art more important than the contents of the museum, covers 3.25 hectares (8 acres) and is made of limestone, glass and titanium.
