that gained prominence in the defense against the Kazan Tatars. Situated at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers, has 11 of its original 13 towers that dominate the skyline. The Archangel Cathedral, a 13th century building, it’s the main landmark of Nizhny Novgorod. The writer Maxim Gorky was born in the city in 1868, Stalin honored him by changing the name of Nizhny Novgorod to Gorky. In 1991, the city regained its name.
