The Alentejo is a Portuguese province known for its vast plains.
At the heart of this region, on a hill surrounded by vineyards and countryside, is the town of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic center is very well preserved, is surrounded by walls, has a beautiful cathedral and about 4000 buildings of interest which include churches, palaces, gates and squares. Évora is a university city facing the future but has a history of 2000 years. It was known by the Romans by Julia Liberalitas. From the Roman times, there are the Temple of Diana (picture below), the most important monument of the city with its fourteen Corinthian columns. Do not miss also in Evora, the Palace of Dom Manuel, the St Francis Church and the Aqueduct. The main square in Evora is located on historic centre, it’s the Praça do Giraldo. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. Hotels in Évora
