Smaller than Lisbon and Oporto, Coimbra is one
of the major cities of Portugal. Plays a key role in the center of the country. Coimbra has interesting archaeological remains dating from Roman times, when the city was called Aeminium. It was the capital of Portugal between 1139 and 1260, became an important cultural center that continues today. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is one of the oldest in Europe. The city has plenty of monuments of the time and gets very domestic and foreign tourism. The university is situated on a hill above the River Mondego. Stands a beautiful library called Biblioteca Joanina. It has three beautiful rooms with painted ceilings, has over 300,000 books in the shelves of fine wood. The Botanical Garden of the 18th century is another highlight. Not to be missed in Coimbra, is the Parque Portugal dos Pequenitos an important collection of Portuguese buildings, the size of children. The 16 km (10 mi) from Coimbra are the Roman ruins of Conimbriga, worth a visit. Do not miss also in Coimbra, the National Museum Machado de Castro, the Church of the Monastery of Santa Cruz, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha (pho below), the City Museum and the beautiful historic city center.
