Julius Caesar called Pax Julia to Beja,
a small town in the interior of the Alentejo, the hottest region of Portugal. It is the main town in the southern province of Alentejo. It was a city frequently disputed, was dominated by Muslims in the 8th century and restored by the Christians in the 13th century. Constant conflicts destroyed almost all the city at that time. There are remains the Castelo de Beja, a beautiful fortress which dominates the city. The architecture with Moorish influence is still very present in Beja, there is also the Queen Leonor Regional Museum, a treasure located in a former 15th century convent. Do not miss also in Beja, the Church of Santo Amaro and the historic center. Hotels in Beja
