Svalbard is a remote archipelago
located in the Arctic Polar Circle. It is the northernmost part of Norway, 565 km (353 mi) north of the mainland, halfway to the north pole. The islands are a frozen white barren mountains, glaciers, ice caves and fjords. It has about 2500 inhabitants and about the same number of polar bears. The Svalbard archipelago is composed of three major islands, Spitzbergen, Nordauslandet and Edgeoya and some smaller covering an area of 61,000 sq km (23,550 mi).
