Meteora is a complex of monasteries
situated in the northwest corner of the Greek region of Thessaly. Lying to the east of Pindos Mountains, Meteora has a unique and strange landscape with huge sandstone up to 1000 m (3300 ft). Meteora means “suspended in air” and the scientists believe that were formed 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period emerging to a delta of a river. A community of 24 monasteries is considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO and an important centre for the Orthodox Church. How to get Meteora
Kalampaka is the nearest town, you can fly from Athens to Volos then a bus, or direct by bus from many Greek cities.
