Of the 1200 islands along the coast of Croatia,
Cres, is one of the largest. Located in the Gulf of Kvamer east of Istria, Cres is long, narrow and mountainous, has 68 km (43 mi) from north to south. In the interior of the island there is a phenomenon that geologists can not explain, the Lake Vrana. Nobody knows how is possible the existence of 220 million cubic meters of fresh water. Lake Vrana is the main source of freshwater of Cres and the neighboring islands. Cres belonged to the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, was ruled by Venice before being dominated by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, becoming part of Croatia in 1945. The main settlements in Cres are Cres Town, Beli, Lubenice and Osor. Don’t miss the 16th century Venetian Clock Tower in Cres Town, Valun with its pitoresque harbour, the ancient village of Lubenice, the town of Beli, the walk between Stivan and Ustrine and the wonderful cleany beaches. Cres is connected to Losinj island by a small bridge. You can get Cres by ferry from the mainland Istria Peninsula or from the island of Krk. Hotels in Cres
