Suzhou was the capital of the
Kingdom of Wu during more than eight centuries and an important centre of the silk industry. Suzhou is known as the Venice of the East due to its canals, it has a traditional architecture along the river and beautiful gardens. The Gardens of Suzhou were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main gardens of Suzhou are the Humble Administrator’s Garden (Zhou Zheng Yuan), the Mountain Villa with Embrancing Beauty (Huanxiu Shanzhuang), the Surging Wave Pavillion (Canglangting) and the Garden of the Master of the Nets (Wang Shi Yuan). Then there are small gardens scattered throughout the city. Don’t miss the Beisi, the North and the Yunyan Pagodas, the Jin Ji Lake, the Pan Gate, the Cold Mountain Temple and the Baodai Bridge.
