The Wolong Nature Reserve is famous worldwide
for their great efforts in protecting and reintroducing the giant panda in danger of extinction. This nature reserve is located 136 km (85 miles) from Chengdu in Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, one of the most beautiful in China. The area covers nearly 200,000 ha (494,000 acres) in the eastern foothills of the mountains of Qionglai. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuary, which belongs to the reserve, was considered World Heritage by UNESCO in 2006. The reserve hosts over 4000 plant species, 50 varieties of mammals, 300 bird species and 30 rare and endangered species, including the giant panda, red panda, which is also called red panda panda or small and snow leopards. The snowy peaks of the reserve are home to the Panda Breeding Center since the program was created by the Chinese government in early 1980. Only about 1600 of these precious bears remain in the wild and this breeding centre is essential to keep the species alive, there is a strong hope that happens. The main purpose is to create animals and release them from captivity, but also the nature of rescue those injured and release some to be appreciated in zoos around the world. The Wolong Nature Reserve is also a teaching academy where students come from all over the world to learn more about breeding practices. Students during training, can trace wild panda footprints and enjoy the many flowers that can be found at the site. During the Autumn leaves and bright flowers of various colors adorn the mountains and forests of the reserve. Birdwatchers are also attracted to the area because as there are many species of plants and different flowers also attract some of the most exotic and rare birds found in Asia. March and April are the best months to visit the reserve. You can reach the Wolong Nature Reserve by car from Chengdu, the trip lasts about four hours.
