Beijing is the political and cultural
centre of China, was the capital in the past 800 years through the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. 34 emperors lived in their imperial palaces. The Forbidden City is the largest complex of imperial palaces of the world. Now called Palace Museum is one of the most visited places in Beijing. It has 9999 buildings on 74 ha (183 acres). Opposite of the Tiananmen Gate lies the gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen) facing Jingshan Park. The Palace Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
