Torres Strait Islands are a group of 274 small islands
located in Torres Strait, the waterway that separates the far northern continental Australia’s Cape York Peninsula and the island of New Guinea. Only 14 islands are inhabited. The islands are mostly part of Australia but some belong to Papua New Guinea. The islands belong to Queensland and their inhabitants are caller Torres Strait Islanders. They are indigenous and distinct from the Aboriginal people of the rest of Australia. The capital and largest city is called Thursday Island, colloquially known as TI.
