The Great Ocean Road in the
Australian state of Victoria was built between 1919 and 1932 as a memorial to Australian soldiers who died during the First World War. It was also an engine of growth in an area where the unemployment rate was higher due to the Great Depression. There are about 285 km (177 mi) along the coast road very hilly and wooded. It is a very dangerous road with steep cliffs and curves but when possible it is worth stopping to admire the stunning views. The road has sweeping vistas along the coast and the Port Campbell National Park. The Shipwreck Coast is a spectacular stretch of rocky coast on which body will have at least 80 ships sunk. The weather can be violent and there are many storms formed by huge ocean waves and strong winds. This storm led to the formation of rocks known as the Twelve Apostles. You can drive from Torquay to Warrnambool or you can start your journey in Melbourne. It is often considered one of the most beautiful road trips of the world. Hotels along the Great Ocean Road
