Yogyakarta is the capital of the province
and an important cultural centre in the middle of lush rice fields and under the shadow of Mount Merapi. The Mataram Palace and its environs are home to many important monuments and temples as the Temple Gebang and Temple Mendut. The beaches around are breathtaking. The temple was rediscovered after Gebang discovered a statue of Ganesha in 1936. As the Borobudur Temple was built during the 8th century. Borobudur is located 40 kms (25 miles) from Yogyakarta. 3 km (1.8 miles) east of Borobodur is Mendut Temple, built in 824 AD by the king of the dynasty Indera Cailendra. Three large colorful statues are inside the temple is decorated by stupas. Pramaban The Temple was built in the 9th century and has shrines dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishu. The Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is the most important building of Yogyakarta and is also known as Kraton (Sultan’s Palace). This elegant building is open to the public. Yogyakarta is near excellent beaches as Baron Beach who has access to an underground river, there is the Drini Beach and Kukup Beach among many white sand beaches where you can enjoy idyllic sunsets.
