Known as “Golden City” Jaisalmer
is situated in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan close to the border with Pakistan in the heart of Thar Desert. It was founded in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Jaisal after his people have fled here. The Jaisalmer Fort is the most famous monument, has sandstone walls and towers 99 to 300 m (1000 ft) above ground in the city. Their colors change depending on time of day, creating fantastic views. Jaisalmer is located at the crossroads of important routes of the camel caravans that linked India to Central Asia, Persia, Arabia, Egypt and Africa.
