Darjeeling is an Indian city
sits on the border between the state of Sikkim and Nepal. Known as “Queen of the Hills” it is one of the most beautiful India’s hill-stations set in a spectacular scenery on Himalayas at 2134 m (7000 ft). In the early 19th century a delegation of British East India Company stopped here and decided that Darjeeling it was a good place to build a sanatorium for their sick soldiers. In 1881 the Himalayan Railway opened and the population had grown from 100 to 10000 in less than one decade. After the Chinese anexation of Tibet in 1950, thousands of Tibetans had crossed the border and settled in Darjeeling. The architecture of the city is stunning, there are Tudor houses, Gothic churches and Hindu temples. Don’t miss the Chowrasta Square, the Hindu Mahakala Temple and the Tibetan monasteries of Ghoom, Busti and Bhutia. Take a ride on the Himalayan Railway.
