Machu Picchu takes your breath away
when first sighted. The verdant, steep peaks, the valley slopes down to the Urubamba River snaking are unforgettable views. Machu Picchu, UNESCO World Heritage Site, was discovered in 1911 by an American archaeologist. The city is 305 m (1000 ft) above the valley, the site has stairs, terraces, temples, terraces, palaces, fountains and towers. The Inca Trail was a route of pilgrimage for centuries, is currently the most inspiring arrival, to one of the most fascinating places in the world. Do not miss the Temple of the Sun, Torreon, Sacred Plaza, Royal Sector, House of Priest and the Temple of Three Windows. Cuzco (or Cusco) is the largest town near Machu Picchu and a nice place to start the journey. You can get Machu Picchu hiking the Inca Trail or by train from Poroy or Ollantaytambo to the Aguacalientes station.
