Trancoso is surrounded by intact tropical forests, turquoise bays and beaches of fine white sand. Trancoso was one of the first Portuguese colonies in Brazil and the influence is noted in some buildings like the Church of St. John the Baptist 16th century perched on a cliff overlooking the beautiful emerald sea. From this cliff to see the beaches from north to south of the city and the surrounding “Quadrado” (Square), a large central square which is the nerve center of Trancoso. Around the square the traditional fishermen’s houses are painted in bright blue, pink and yellow banana mixed with gourmet boutiques and cafes that give a special charm to this beautiful city. During the day the square is filled with children who show their soccer skills. At sunset, people ride horses or enjoy a glass of wine in preparation for the busy nights of the central square that is illuminated by hundreds of candles and filled with Bahian musicians playing drums and guitar.
