São Luis is located on the island
of the same name, in the Bay of São Marcos. São Luis is in a place where the French built a fort in 1612. Three years later the fort was conquered by the Portuguese. São Luis is the capital of the state of Maranhão. The historic centre was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1997 for its cultural importance, it has a style deeply Portuguese. It has an architecture of the 17th century, decorated with blue-and-white tiles of Portugal. São Luis has the largest and best preserved heritage of Portuguese colonial architecture in Latin America.
