Salvador da Bahia is the third largest city in Brazil
after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and is the capital of Bahia state. Also called Salvador is known as “Africa in Exile” by the great cultural mix of the population. The city has stunning architecture and is overlooking the Baia de Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints), the largest bay on the coast of Brazil. Its emerald waters on its 38 islands are some the most beautiful and green that Brazil has. The beaches around Salvador are also known as some of the best of Brazil. On top of a 71 m (233 ft) hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Salvador, the city’s historic centre is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. The Portuguese heritage in the city is considered one of the most important examples of colonial architecture in the Americas. Don’t miss the City Hall Square (Praça do Municipio), the Cathedral Square (Praça da Sé) and the Shrine of Jesus (Terreiro de Jesus), Rio Branco Palace, the Palace of the Governor and many beautiful churches. Not to be missed also is the Largo do Pelourinho and Rua Alfredo de Brito which includes the typical cobblestone from Portugal. In the South side of the City Hall Square (Praça do Município) there are many museums and churches like the Church of St. Benedict, the Cathedral, the São Francisco Church and Convent, the Museum of Sacred Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
