Translating as “Black Gold”,
Ouro Preto (originally name Villa Rica), was the center of the gold rush in Brazil in the 18th century. There are still important mineral resources to explore in the region. It was an El Dorado, until the gold started to run out, the Portuguese rulers imposed high taxes and resulted the Inconfidencia Revolt. The prosperity of the city never recovered but this period left a legacy of unequaled beauty of baroque buildings. Ouro Preto is considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the most beautiful towns of Brazil. Just outside Ouro Preto, lies the small town of New Lavras, an old slave town.
